Certificado de concordancia: link your old NIE to your DNI

This Police certificate proves identity continuity after Spanish nationality. It does not update every record by itself, and the request process is not identical at every unit.

How should I request a certificado de concordancia?

  1. Confirm that someone needs proof linking the numbers

Use the certificate when an organisation cannot connect a record under your former NIE to your current DNI, or when it explicitly asks for proof. The certificate proves that both identifiers belong to one person; it is not a compulsory post-nationality step for everyone and does not update records automatically.

  2. If your first DNI is pending, take the old identity document

The official first-DNI guidance requires a newly naturalised person who has a TIE or EU registration certificate showing the NIE to bring it to that appointment. Ask the issuing unit whether it can also issue the concordance certificate. The national guidance does not promise that this is automatic, free or available at every first-DNI appointment.

  3. If you already have a DNI, find a unit that handles concordance

Use the Policía Nacional office finder and inspect the procedures listed for the individual dependency. Do not assume the nearest Police or immigration office handles this certificate. Follow the unit that explicitly names concordance or confirms that it is responsible.

  4. Confirm the appointment, documents, form and fee before acting

The appointment channel and checklist vary by unit. The current EX-15 form is for NIE and resident or non-resident certificates; it does not name concordance, so use it only if the responsible unit asks for it. Do not pay Modelo 790 Código 012 from a copied checklist.

If the unit directs you to that form, select the current certificate/report option and amount it identifies.

  5. Use the certificate with the record that needs correction

Keep the original and a secure copy. Provide it to the organisation that asked for the link or still holds the old NIE, together with any other evidence that organisation requests. The certificate proves identity continuity; it does not guarantee that one document is sufficient for every registry, bank or public body.

Use this as a proof-and-channel decision

Start with the record problem, not a generic checklist. Identify which organisation still uses the former NIE and whether it has actually asked for a concordance certificate or another document.

Then confirm the responsible Police unit's live instructions. Office, appointment category, documents, form and fee can vary; Guiri should not turn one local checklist into a national promise.

  • Keep your former TIE or EU registration certificate and current DNI available.
  • Confirm that the Police dependency handles concordance before booking or paying.
  • Use the certificate only with the organisation whose old record needs the identity link.
  • Redact both identity numbers before sharing a request or error with Guiri.

Questions about linking a former NIE to a DNI

What does a certificado de concordancia prove?
It is a public document issued by the Policía Nacional showing that a former NIE and a current DNI belong to the same person after Spanish nationality. It proves the link between identifiers; it does not replace the DNI or automatically update another organisation's record.
Is it mandatory after acquiring Spanish nationality?
No national source reviewed says everyone must obtain it. The BOE describes it as especially useful, highly advisable and common. Request it when an organisation cannot link your former NIE to your DNI or explicitly asks for proof.
Will the Police issue it automatically with my first DNI?
The first-DNI guidance requires you to bring your TIE or EU registration certificate when it shows your NIE, but it does not promise automatic concordance issuance. Ask the issuing unit before the appointment and do not rely on a blog's claim that it will always be immediate or free.
Do I always need EX-15 and Modelo 790 Código 012?
Do not assume so. The current EX-15 does not name concordance, and the 790-012 generator has a generic certificate/report option rather than a concordance-specific line. Confirm the current form and fee with the responsible unit before completing or paying anything.
Where do I book the appointment?
Use the instructions for a Police dependency that explicitly handles concordance. Not every office exposes the same procedure or appointment category, and not every office participates in the same online booking route.
