Spanish nationality file status: official check and when to act

Use the Ministry of Justice service to check the current phase of a nationality-by-residence file, then use the actual notification for deadlines or required action.

How do I check my nationality expediente status?

  1. Open the official consultation service

    Use the official nationality-by-residence consultation service on the Sede Electrónica del Ministerio de Justicia. Keep this separate from the immigration-authorisation status portal used for extranjería files.

  2. Enter all four fields exactly

    The current form asks for your NIE, expediente number, year and date of birth. Copy them from your receipt and do not paste these identifiers into an unknown third-party tracker.

  3. Read the phase without predicting a date

    Record the exact wording shown on screen. A phase label is useful for orientation, but it does not prove that a notification was delivered, guarantee a fixed sequence, or predict when the file will finish.

  4. Act from the notification, not the label

    If the screen refers to a requerimiento or resolution, open the actual official notification and follow its documents, route and deadline. For a notified grant, the Ministry's consultation may provide the original electronic resolution; the resolution controls the next step.

Use the status screen safely

The status service is an informational check, not proof that a formal notification was delivered. A copied list of status names cannot decide your deadline or next submission.

Keep the screen, filing receipt and any notification together. If you use Guiri to understand the wording, remove your NIE, expediente number, date of birth and other personal details first.

  • Use only the official Ministry service for the status check.
  • Do not infer processing order or remaining time from a phase label.
  • Use the actual requerimiento or resolution for documents, deadlines and appeal information.

Common questions about your nationality expediente status

What does my nationality file status mean?
Treat the displayed wording as the current phase of your file, not as a guaranteed sequence or timetable. The screen alone does not start a deadline. If an official requerimiento or resolution has been issued, read that notification for the action that applies to your case.
How long does nationality by residence take?
Orden JUS/1625/2016 sets a one-year period from receipt by the competent directorate to resolve and notify. If no express decision is notified in that period, the application is deemed denied by administrative silence. That legal rule is not a prediction of your completion date or advice on what remedy to use.
What if they ask for more documents (requerimiento)?
Article 7 of Orden JUS/1625/2016 gives three months from notification of the requerimiento to correct or provide what was requested, and suspends the one-year resolution clock during that period. The actual notice tells you what to submit and where; if you do not respond, the file may be archived as deemed withdrawn.
Is the status screen an official notification?
No. The Ministry says the consultation is not a notification. For a notified grant, the service may let you access the original electronic resolution. Article 12 of Orden JUS/1625/2016 gives 180 days from the day after notification to complete the grant's required conditions, so follow the resolution and notification rather than the status date.
Is this the same as the extranjería status service?
No. This page is for nationality by residence handled by the Ministry of Justice. Immigration authorisations handled by an Oficina de Extranjería use a different official status service. A TIE card or cita previa also follows a separate route.
