Spain's asylum red card: what the document proves

Tarjeta roja is the familiar name for an international-protection applicant document — not a grant of asylum, residence permit, TIE or travel document.

How should I read my asylum applicant document?

  1. Start with the formalisation date

Check whether the application was formalised before 12 June 2026 or on or after that date. Spain's June 2026 instruction keeps earlier files under the previous framework and applies the new EU procedure to later applications. Do not use an older colour-based timeline for a newer file.

  2. Read the official heading, not just the colour

Under the new procedure, the administration issues a registration document and, after formalisation, an applicant-status document. The EU rule defines their function and required information; it does not promise a red card. Older files may use a white receipt and later the document commonly called tarjeta roja.

  3. Use the printed validity and renewal wording

Read the issue date, expiry date and renewal instructions on the actual document. Under the new procedure, an applicant-status document may be valid for up to 12 months and must cover the period during which the person may remain.

Older operational guidance used nine months for the white receipt and one year for the red card; do not transfer that timetable to every newer document.

  4. Check the exact work notation

Do not infer work rights from the document's colour, an NIE or elapsed time alone. The current Spanish rule authorises work after six months only under its stated conditions and when the valid applicant document says “autoriza a trabajar”. Read the printed effective date and follow any individual decision.

  5. Use the official route for your cohort

Start with the current Interior route for files from 12 June 2026 or the separate route for earlier files, then follow the instructions attached to your document. Older operational guidance routes document renewal through enabled Police stations and ICPPlus, but the current channel can depend on the file date and document type.

  6. Treat travel and notices separately

An applicant document is not a travel document and does not itself grant a right to travel to another EU country. Interior describes a separate exceptional travel-authorisation route. Do not rely on the card for border crossing without case-specific written authorisation and advice; keep contact details current and act from the actual notice.

Use the document in your hand — not a generic timeline

Before sharing a screenshot, cover your name, photo, NIE, expediente number, date of birth, address, signature, QR codes and barcodes.

  • Registration or formalisation date relative to 12 June 2026
  • Issue date, expiry date and renewal instruction

Questions about the tarjeta roja and current applicant documents

What is the tarjeta roja in Spain?
Tarjeta roja is the familiar name for the older documento acreditativo de la condición de solicitante de protección internacional. It records applicant status; it is not a decision granting asylum or subsidiary protection. For applications formalised from 12 June 2026, the current EU procedure defines registration and applicant-status documents without promising a particular colour, so read the official heading on the document issued to you.
What is the difference between the white receipt and the red card?
In the older framework, the white resguardo records the formalised application and the later applicant document is commonly called the tarjeta roja. Older official operational guidance gives them different validity periods. That colour sequence should not be assumed for applications formalised from 12 June 2026, where the current law describes a registration document and an applicant-status document by function.
Does a tarjeta roja let me work?
Do not rely on the colour or count six months by yourself. The current Spanish rule authorises work after six months from the application only when its other conditions are met, including admission and a delay not attributable to the applicant. The practical proof is a valid applicant document that says “autoriza a trabajar”, together with its effective date and any individual decision.
Is it a residence permit or TIE?
No. An international-protection applicant document records applicant status and the applicable right to remain during the procedure. It is not a residence permit, does not grant protection by itself and is not the same as a TIE issued for a residence status.
How do I renew an asylum applicant document?
Use the Interior e-office route for files from 12 June 2026 or the separate route for earlier files, and follow the instruction on the document. Older OAR guidance uses ICPPlus and enabled Police stations for renewals, but do not assume that every newer document uses the same category, office or validity period.
Can I travel with a tarjeta roja?
The applicant document is not a travel document and is not enough for border crossing or travel to another EU country. Interior describes a separate exceptional travel authorisation. Get case-specific written authorisation and professional advice before leaving Spain; do not substitute a generic autorización de regreso.
Does the document prove residence or public-service rights because it has a NIE?
No. Older white and red applicant documents may display an NIE, but the NIE is an identifier. It does not by itself prove residence, permission to work, Social Security registration, benefits or travel rights. Use the status, dates and exact wording on the valid document for the purpose you need to prove.
