Definition
Hacienda is the everyday word Spaniards use for the AEAT. When a letter says "Agencia Tributaria" or "Hacienda", they mean the same body. Some regional governments also have their own Hacienda Foral (in the Basque Country) or Hacienda Tributaria (in Navarra), which administer direct taxes locally.
- Treat Hacienda as a colloquial label until the document identifies the actual authority.
- Separate national AEAT matters from foral, autonomous-community, and municipal tax matters.
- Use the issuer and procedure on the notice to choose the portal, payment route, or response channel.
Example: “pay Hacienda” is not enough to choose a website; an AEAT assessment, a foral return, and a municipal IBI bill use different authorities and routes.
