Plain English: provisional tax assessment
Definition
“Provisional” describes the assessment's legal scope; it does not predict that a later definitive assessment will be issued. The notice controls the amount, voluntary payment period, and available remedies. When both are available, a potestativo recurso de reposición and an economic-administrative claim are alternative routes, not simultaneous first steps. A challenge does not ordinarily suspend collection by itself, so treat the challenge deadline and any payment, suspension, or guarantee decision as connected but separate questions and follow the notice and current official route.
- Check the tax, period, quantified amount, interest or surcharge, and procedure scope stated in the assessment.
- Read the remedies section before choosing reposición or an economic-administrative claim.
- Handle payment or a suspension request separately; filing a challenge alone may not stop collection.
Example: a Propuesta de liquidación provisional normally opens an allegations stage; an Acuerdo de liquidación provisional is the assessment. Record the remedies deadline and voluntary-payment date, then decide separately whether a suspension request is needed.
Where this appears
Liquidación provisional can appear in Spanish forms, appointment screens, official letters, PDF instructions, receipts, or portal status messages. This term usually appears in AEAT or Hacienda notices. Pay attention to the issue date, response window, reference number, tax year, and whether the notice asks for payment, documents, clarification, or an appeal.
Use the term as a clue, not the whole answer. A public definition can explain the usual meaning, but a personal document may change the deadline, office route, evidence required, or risk of ignoring the message.
